The Faces, the Scenes and the Graveyard at The Carolina Cup
Believe the hype about the Carolina Cup. From the expo and clinics to the athletes and businesses, this event blew away all my expectations. One of the largest, toughest SUP races in the entire world took place in our own backyard. Competitors from across the globe descended upon Wrightsville Beach to battle the waves, the tides, each other and themselves. The grueling 13.2 mile Graveyard course steered challengers from the Blockade Runner north, through Mason’s Inlet, down the backside of the island to Lee’s Cut, under both bridges, past the Masonboro inlet jetty and eventually back to the Hotel.
This race is undoubtedly one of the reasons Wilmington has been selected
to compete for Outside Online’s Best Towns 2016 competition. From the many SUP events to the US Open Fat Bike Beach Championship to the Ironman North Carolina and Ultra Marathons like the Badwater: Cape Fear and the Southern Tour Ultra, no city deserves the title more.
