Oak Island Lighthouse Run 2016
Halfway through a half marathon, drinking a Bloody Mary at a make shift driveway tiki bar, it occurred to me that a Jimmy Buffett themed race on Oak Island was precisely where I wanted to be. The cool ocean breeze was stiff, but welcome, the sun shone brightly and the Bloody Mary was mixed with just the right amount of Worchesthire. That drink was but one of several highlights from the 18th Oak Island Lighthouse Run. I met a few more members from the tight knit group of the Wilmington Road Runners Club. I constantly see them supporting and helping one another along the way at any given race. They bring a true team spirit to a very individual sport. Today, more than 30 of them will be racing the Boston Marathon (check their progress at baa.org). I’d like to wish each of them luck and congratulate them on making the field. I came across a father and daughter running together several times on the course and happened to be there as they raced towards the finish line, hand in hand, both grinning ear to ear. What a special moment that must have been for each of them. And at the finish line, I found two older gentlemen laughing and palling around. Not only had they completed a race, but they both seemed to be so vibrant and full of life that it just brought a smile to my face. I’m already blocking off a mid April weekend for next year’s event. I’d highly recommend you do the same.
